Description

Entry for Chapter 2! I'm so thrilled that there's a new biome for tokota adventures!

Since I'm a nerd, have a Pleistocene megafauna fight; featuring Machaeron* in one corner and Arctodus simus in the other. Also hello Nekno has a pet theory about this event, and I'm sticking to that for the story-line.

*Machaeron is technically a tokota, but I headcanon that he's a huge machairodont cat that just gets filed away as a tokota. Plus I just got myself a Smilodon skull replica, and can't resist the urge to draw them everywhere :p

---------------

Wouldn't you know, there's a jungle down here. A proper, tropical jungle. I am very much reminded of my vacations to southern Mexico; Palenque in particular (this heat! It's just like Palenque!)

And there are caves. Huge caves. They are organizing expeditions into the caves. I would go, but, I'm still on crutches. That, and I think I saw what looked like giant scratch marks on the walls. Mitchell said they were "strata very typical of the area's geology", but I'm not entirely convinced...

Instead, I opted to investigate the source of a rising pillar of mist with a few other people. I hope they don't mind our slower pace, Penny and I are not spring chickens anymore, ha.

---

It's not mist, it's
steam; there's a system of hot springs out here, many of them cascading down a sheer cliff. Now they're organizing a climbing expedition up that, too.

Obviously I can't join that, either.

I really am a burden out here... aren't I.

I decided to stay below and "test" the temperature of a nearby pool. The pool is formed by a number of cascades from the cliff hot springs, so the water is warm. It feels wonderful on my feet, and hey! I am following my doctor's orders to keep my feet warm!

Penny looks like she's considering wading in with me; she's always liked hot baths, it soothes her Arthritis.

There's a black piebald halfmane hanging around with us. He's not after food, he didn't eat all of the treats I offered him, so I guess he just wants to keep us company. He's very sweet, I think he can tell we're sort of like invalids, ha ha.

----

There was a sound like a tokota fight alarmingly close by, and then-!

And then there was a snarling, writhing mass of very large bodies crashing through the trees, into the pool! It was so sudden, my heart jumped into my throat! Luckily it was on the far shore, but we still backed away.

It was really hard to tell what they were, they were thrashing so much. One was light tan, and it looked like it
maybe was a dire tokota? Maybe? It was about that size, but it was very feline, and had the biggest set of fangs I've ever seen; not even the largest fanged dire I knew of compared to these daggers!

I'd say it looked like a saber-toothed tiger, but, that's impossible.

It
is impossible, isn't it?

The animal it was fighting looked more familiar; it was dark brown- almost black- and definitely was a bear, but it was a bear unlike any I've ever seen!

I live out near Haines, I've seen grizzly bears in person. That's not what this was. This was the size of a large normal build, maybe even a medium dire. It was massive! And it had an unusual pale face mask, unlike anything I've ever seen on a bear out here.

Anyway, the two animals continued to fight horribly; the pool was not very deep, so the water really didn't bother them one bit. They were very well matched; neither was willing to give any ground at all. Fur and spittle was flying everywhere, they were a mess of claws and teeth and bristling manes.
Oh, and the sounds they made! I'm sure everyone for miles heard this fight! The bellows and growls made the water thrum (just like
Jurassic Park!) and I could feel it in my very bones.

Clearly someone did hear them, because then there was this deep, rolling sound, like a rock slide or- or like a very loud roar, that came echoing down the valley. The two animals instantly scrambled apart in what looked like abject terror, and vanished into the jungle in two different directions. Whatever made that sound scared them so badly, they preferred to run than continue what looked like an important territorial fight.

...

Might that roar be tied with the claw-marks in the caves?

I get the feeling our tokotas are not the top hunters out here.
