Big news guys.
Summer Fangs is currently on hiatus. The reason is I really feel like it's not that much fun to work on it at the moment. I drew one page over the winter break, and that one page was really, really not fun to do. It had nothing to do with the contents of the page; I think I'm just in an artistic phase where drawing dogs is not as enjoyable to me as it used to be.

I think the words of Terryl Whitlatch may also be affecting me. When I met her at CTN in November, I showed her my sketchbook (which had some SF question answer sketches in it) and she said something like this about them:

"The thing about manga is that anyone can do it"

Now, I know for a fact that I'm not even going to try making a living off of making manga, but that comment blew my mind for a completely different reason. It told me that the key to being successful as an artist is to do something that no one else can do. So that's what I'm working on at the moment.

Summer Fangs will be finished one day, that's a promise, but I don't want to work on it if I'm not enjoying the process. I also want to establish an artistic identity outside of the Ginga fandom; one that will wear a much more professional face.

Additionally, I've temporarily closed the questions on the Ask blog, because they're piling up and I would like to get through the backlog before getting new questions.

I trust you guys will understand, because you're awesome and I love you all.

I dunno.. I kind of understand where she's coming from but then again it's a poor way to say it. It just really bugs me. Perhaps anyone can try to draw manga but not anyone can draw manga -well-. Just like anyone can draw a dog... the differences of your understanding of anatomy, amount practice, preference in style, talent and experiences will change how you would go about doing it.
There are various styles with manga and some are much more obviously an imitation. North American comics that mimic it poorly tend to be annoying for me, they're not appealing to look at in the least.
There will always be exceptions. Being able to draw manga style and simpsons style is what landed Nina Matsumoto a job with Bongo. They'd been wanting to do something with an authentic manga style to it and a drawing she did for fun brought it about. She's penciled many comics for them since. I think it's not so much drawing manga as it is focusing on what you want to do with your art and what satisfies you. Being more diverse in what you can draw and how well you understand it will probably be very helpful, particularly if you're wanting to get into animation. When it comes to being unique I guess that's style and skill, and those just come about naturally over time.

Anyway I just wandered this way while thinking about Summer Fangs. I really support you doing what you want and drawing what you want! I hope you continue to make great progress towards it. :)
