Walk cycle of my Windsonde gryphon, Tafari
Tafari Ref Sheet v2.0 by nekonotaishou

Practicing with Toon Boom Animate Pro, and with cleaning up and coloring animations.

Not perfect; feet slide a little, masses shift, very few things are tied down (if anything ^^;)

I probably shouldn't have chosen a walk cycle to practice finalizing, since they tend to have lots of frames. This one has 28 frames.
Should have done a run cycle X_x

I will probably go back and do the tail properly; it's only a 'tweened' still at the moment because I was darn tired.

No wings because I'd already put all this effort into the shoulders and hips, and a set of wings would have covered it all up.

First deviation of 2013! Happy New Year!
though I believe I started this in the last few days of 2012

Update cleaned up some of the lines around the shoulder, elbow, and haunch.

Toon Boon Animate Pro
28 frames, on ones, played at 24fps

I love how smooth and natural the movement of your character is. And yes, tails can be quite difficult to animate at times! ^^' Wonderful work!

The bouncy feathers give the motion that extra oomph! for believability. Very lovely m'dear! I can see there's a slight "hiccup" or jump in the movement, but it's hardly noticeable, really :') It's still very smooth and I just can't get over how wonderful those bouncy feathers are! Makes him so cute~!

Welcome! I know how frustrating and difficult flash animation can be... but when you stick with it, beautiful pieces like this come about~! : )

This is great!! The only thing that catches my eye is the bounciness of the head. Birds of prey can keep their head level even if you turn their body in a different position.

The bouncy head actually comes from the reference video of a cheetah walking. I didn't think about that aspect of raptors at all ^^; maybe I should have

Hmm, I want to check out this Toon Boom. What is it like?
It's been so long since I last animated anything (After Effects tweens don't count) I want to get back to it and see how rusty I am at it...

Toon Boom (as I understand it so far) is kind of like Flash, but with some extra capabilities that make it better for 2D animation.

I shall gush a little about it now:
You can rotate the canvas, and limit the playback to any set of frames you want. You draw on 'lineart' layers and then make 'color art' out of your lines that fill in really quickly. You can track your frames with an x-sheet and timeline. If there's audio you can choose to scrub the timeline with it on or off, and the program can more or less tell you which mouth shapes to use if doing a lip sync. If you have multiple pasted copies of the same frame (like for a cycle that then changes or something) any changes made to one of -"frame 5" let's say- are made to all copies of "frame 5". It's pretty cool. A little tricky and temperamental, but still cool.

I'd like to see you do more animations, I love your Wurr film <3

Thanks! Sounds pretty good, actually. I shall look into it, it's far too long since the last time I had a chance to animate anything.

The walk looks pretty awesome to me for a rough, the basic motion is working out really great but the thing that's most bothering me (from my animator eye) is the stiffness of the tail. It's very... 'Flashy' (er, 'cut-out-y?') which would be fine if the rest of the body was more stiff but the rest of the body is wonderfully swishy! There's good overlap of movement with the feathers that flick! If I was a teacher (which I'm totally not and glad not) I'd say 'maybe make those tail feathers flick a bit too.' The up and down basic motion is good. Well, apologies for the critique! XD Animating is VERY tiring, I know...

Thanks so much for the crit, I will keep those points in mind. Though as was mentioned above, the tail is just a temporary tween until I have the time to come back to this and fix it.

So pretty! But this must be his "what a lame day"-walk, i would think Tafari would normally walk with his head up, all haughty and awesome looking, 'cause he's high class sexy and he knows it.

Well, I usually turn to real-life references for quadrupeds. Eadweard Muybridge is your best friend for that [link]

Also, [link] is also a fantastic resource because you can pause the videos and go through frame by frame using the left-right arrow keys :)

You know, when it comes to detail, we tend to... take things personally and try to nail it by registering every single details, almost like tracing... but then, why not use 3d software or make cutout animation where all the assets are precise?
But seems you just proved my point that i said recently: The beauty of handdrawn 2d animation is that it captures the impression of movement, not the precision of it. And that's the only consistency and believability unique to the medium compared the rest of animation mediums. So there. Great job with the feather. I love your drawing.
