Description
I'm just gonna scream real loud all day, ok?
It's a resin replica of the skull of Smilodon fatalis, so no real bones this time. It is HUGE. Absolutely massive! It's on a similar scale as the lion and tiger skulls at the zoo (the skull in my ID picture is a tiger, for reference).
The teeth are about 6.5 inches long, not including the root. Total they're about 11 inches. The whole thing is about 14 inches long.
Smilodon was a type of cat called a "machairodont", an ancient family that is not closely related to any cat alive today. Despite the popular name of "saber-toothed tiger", it was no more closely related to tigers than it was to house cats. Scientists just call them saber-toothed cats to avoid confusion.
I had a sizeable amount of respect for Smilodon before, but now, and to think they may have been group hunters... and this wasn't even the largest species...
