Lately I've been feeling like my animation skills are not at all where I want/need them to be. It sort of feels like the handle I had on it is not quite there; something is severely lacking. Considering that animation is going to be my future career, this definitely counts as a crisis-type-thing I need to sort out.
This took me a step in the right direction, I feel. Expect more test animations soon. (I apologize if I owe you a commission, I appreciate your patience. But I really need to address this)
Not perfect or finished, but then, Reva has so many colors that I'll probably never finish coloring it X_x Ignore the notes on the right upper and lower corners.
Skipped her wings because I didn't want to deal with them. Folded wings are a pain in the ass to draw, and I did not want to draw them 14 times.
Done in Photoshop CS2. Used Flash to test the timing.
Hey! Just so you know, you can use the beautiful tools in Flash to help you if you ever want to put those folded wings in - all you'd need to do is draw them once in the first frame and paste them into the rest of your frames...using the arrow tools to 'nudge' them into place and using the onionskin feature to keep their placement on Reva's body consistent. Hurray!
Spacing as in timing? there's many ways of doing that - here are some resources that might help you start: [link] and a free book that is one of the best books out there on starting in on animation: [link] and of course the book every animator needs: [link] the Animator's Survival Kit.
You can also use a 'dope sheet' or an 'exposure sheet' to plan out your overall timing. Here's some info on those: [link] (and a free animation book there, as well on the other pages).
I've always thought self-criticism (even a little self-bashing) is a part of any creative process, you can't possibly expect to make it perfect in the little time you've had to practice, and there will always be that one guy/gal that you will feel his better than you. I personally think it's really good and went "dum du-du-da-dum..." while watching this animation.
Also, this is wonderful
Thanks Baili!
PS: as an individual with a degree in animation, do you any advice on planning spacing?

Hopefully that helps a bit!
I really like it, I think it's pretty smooth.
Thank you!
