Since I currently don't have a tablet, I've turned to practicing 3D animation to pass the time.

This is my first ever completed horse walk cycle in any medium. I know it's not perfect, or 'pro quality', but I'm satisfied with it for my first try :)

Used Eadweard Muybridge sequences and greenscreenanimals as reference.

I don't know what that shape on the front leg is. Probably something caused by the render settings

Animated in Maya 2013

Model downloaded from [link]

Extra-blah-stuff: I had to clean up the skin weights of the elbows, since every time I posed the front legs the chest collapsed in on itself and shrunk.

This looks like 3d horse pose tool, is it?

It's a rigged 3D model made specifically for animation, animated in a professional 3D animation program. I don't know what a pose tool is.

It's really good for the first attempt. Animation is about getting creative- not getting close to real !

Thanks!

Well, the industry I hope to go into requires them to get as close to real as possible, so I was actually aiming for realsism.

Hi !  Thanks for the reply.

Are you learning animation professionally in an art school ? I like animating - just for  hobby. Will it be ok with you to share your project files- I mean whatever you are willing to share. I am experimenting and it'll be a good thing if I have project files for my study.

What program are you using? You might not be using one that's good for animation.

It helps to have had classes and experience in making 3D animations ^^;

Classes most definitely help. So does good reference footage and images. Also, a lot of 2D animation experience goes a long way in making 3D animation much easier.

When I first thought of 3D, I thought I'd have a ready model and that to move it would be very easy XD

Many people seem to think that about 3D, but it's a much more difficult process than most people realize.

That's crazy you actually got the movement of each leg and how the back and head moves. Exactly correct.

Woah, nice cycle. My only critique might be the head, it seems a little large for the build of the horse. Otherwise, amazing work for your first try!

looks dang good. heres a gallop i did from a very similar model: [link] im realy digging that walk, i think one think is add more twist to the hips and shoulders, not just the up and down movement.

Actually that looks like the same model, but on a different display 'setting-thing'.

I considered adding more twist, but then I remembered that horses can't really twist their shoulders from side to side. Still, I'll look into it and see if there's anything I can add :)

yeah its like a split version, but meh. horses can twist a teeeeny bit in the shoulders, but there can be quite a bit of torque there in the back.

Try clicking the big nurbs curve that's on the ground; it looks like four arrows pointing in different directions. Then take a look at the channel editor, there should be one labeled 'display'. That's how you change the look of the model from 'full of holes' to solid mesh :)

Good to know! Thanks!
